Image of Board-Mounted Maxam & Smith Scroll Wheel Apple Parer

Maxam's Patent Automatic Scroll Wheel Apple Parer

Samuel Maxam's first parer was a board-mounted scroll wheel quick return. Turn the handle and the inside hub of the hand-driven gear, which acts as a rotating inclined plane (basically a screw), pushes a first class lever connected to gears which rotate the paring arm. Once the paring is completed the gears and lever disengage and snap back to the starting position. The cast iron base is embossed PATENTED APR. 10TH 1856 BY S.N. MAXAM. Maxam's design was later modified into a cast iron table mounted model.
