Two Lockey and Howland Split-Frame Mechanisms

In the split-frame (with low base) the movable part of the frame is placed on the axle and can slide forward or backward.

Back to Split-Frame

Thornton places the Split-Frame on low base between the Heavy-Frame and the Tilt-Frame when discussing the evolution of Lockey and Howland's Split-Frame designs Thornton, 1997, p. 55). We have changed the order to imply that the Heavy-Frame came after the Split-Frame on low base.

The Heavy-Frame and Tilt-Frame both use the same mechanism for the push-off, a first class lever. Both the Heavy and Tilt Frame designs place the turntable up higher on the frame. The Tilt-Frame design is based upon a later patent. Furthermore, the Split-Frame on the low base in our museum has an original thumbscrew consistent with earlier designs.
